Professional experience
Matthew has been employed at Lee and Lyons since early 2002 and was admitted as a solicitor in 2007. Matthew has extensive experience in public and products liability, property damage/contract works claims, policy interpretation issues, trade credit, general commercial litigation and statutory classes. Matthew has participated in litigation on behalf of corporate insured's as well as local and overseas insurers in relation to claims against manufacturers and suppliers, occupiers, real estate agents, building professionals and engineers.
Matthew's experience includes:
- Acting on behalf of an overseas insurer and assisting it in obtaining authorisation to conduct general insurance business activities in Australia from Australian Prudential Regulation Insurance Authority (APRA).
- Advising an insurer in relation to its liability regarding a policy of insurance for an assurance fund set up for the purposes of providing a safety net for overseas students enrolled in private education institutions in Australia.
- Acting for an engineer in relation to a professional indemnity/public liability claim on Norfolk Island.
- Acting on behalf of a multinational engineering corporation in relation to a professional indemnity claim made by a statutory body who alleged that the engineers conduct resulted in the failure of a freeway.
- Advising an insurer in relation to a political risk claim which resulted in an insured supplier forfeiting monies owed due to government intervention in a mine in Fiji.
- Acting for insurers various security firms in relation to allegations of assault as against the security firms employees at various locations.
- Acting on behalf of an occupier in relation to a claim pursuant to a labour hire agreement and advising in relation to the amendments to the Limitation Act for personal injury.
- Acting on behalf of a trade credit insurer to resist preference payments claims made from liquidators.
- Acting on behalf of an international electronic appliance manufacturer resisting a claim from the liquidator in relation to constructive delivery of items ordered from the liquidated company's "virtual warehouse".
